Background

To mark the 50th anniversary of the highly successful International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957, the International Heliophysical Year (IHY) began in February 2007 and runs to February 2009. It aims to co-ordinate the activities of many solar, heliospheric and near-Earth spacecraft and ground-based observatories for specific scientific campaigns. IHY is NOT designed to be another red-tape activity - it is being set up as an enabling activity for the grass-roots scientist to drive co-ordinated observations, combined with a wide range of public outreach activities.

Vision

IHY has three primary objectives:

Advancing our understanding of the Heliophysical Processes that Govern the Sun, Earth and Heliosphere

Continuing the tradition of international research and advancing the legacy on the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year.

Demonstrating the Beauty, Relevance and Significance of Space and Earth Science to the World.
